Unforgiven (1992)

Watched this with Nate for our podcast. I am still baffled how I had never seen this before. Anyone who knew my Grandpa Pearson knows how big of a fan of westerns he was. He was pretty much responsible for my introduction to the genre and to John Wayne. I even some some Clint Eastwood movies with him. This came out while he was still fairly healthy and I am certain he had to have seen it, yet I have no recollection of ever seeing it with him. Anyways, the movie itself. This is a super solid film that ended up winning four Oscars and was nominated for several more. We follow Clint Eastwood and Bill Munny as he is hired by The "Schofield Kid" (Jaimz Woolvett) and drags his friend Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman) along to collect a bounty on some guys who cut up a prostitute when she laughed at his "manhood." Bill Munny's wife has passed on, he's a pig farmer and the pigs have fallen ill. Bill leave's his kids to tend to the farm while he collects on the bounty. When they acutally get into town he has to avoid the Sheriff, Little Bill Dagget (Gene Hackman) in order to hae a chance of collecting on the bounty. As soon as the killing begins Ned realizes he no longer has the stomach for it and departs for home. Unfortunately his route is predicted and he's captured by friends of the first victim looking for revenge. Ned is taken into town where Little Bill beats him for information about the location of Bill Munny. Eventually Ned is beaten to death. After Bill Munny and the Schofield Kid finish off the task they are about to head for home when one of the prositutes informs them of Ned's death. Bill does not take the news well. He sends the Schofield Kid to deliver the money to his children and heads in to town to avenge Ned's death. What ensues is a violent encounter in the bar where anyone who even attempts to oppose Bill is killed. Bill returns to his farm, collects his kids, and they dissapear. The film ends by telling us of rumors that they ended up in San Fransisco running a dry good store. This was a great film. I rate this 9 out of 10 stars. The only thing that keeps this from a perfect 10 is just the level of violence in it.
